Availability of freshwater in sufficient quantity and quality is an indispensable condition for sustainable development. Water availability influences demography, health, agriculture, rural and regional development, biological diversity, transport, consumption and production patterns. This general truth is of particular importance in tropical areas, where scarcity, abundance or pollution of water cause destruction and human suffering. In the present contribution, discussion focuses on notions and conditions of sustainable water resources development in tropical areas, as outlined in Agenda 21. Knowledge of water resources is seen as an indispensable component of sustainability. That is why water resources assessment in tropical areas, understood as examination of availability and use of freshwater, including quantity and quality aspects, is so important.
