Influence of pH and the amount of Cd added to the soil on the yield of alfalfa and the uptake of Cd

At low pH the concentration of Cd in the plant rises and may reach toxic levels even at low levels of pollution. Neutralizing soil acidity and bringing pH of the soil to 6 or overliming by adding an excess of CaCO3 to the soil greatly reduces the availability of Cd even when it is added in water solible form. Neutralizing soil acidity from pH 4.3 to pH 6.0 also decreases the transfer of Cd from soil to plant (plant Cd: soil Cd ratio) more than 6 times for all levels of added Cd. The content of total Cd in the soil is not sufficient to characterize its availability to the plant and pH should be taken into account especially for soils where its variation is high.
