Rhizomania: the role of vector and virus resistance

Resistance to rhizomania introduced into cultivars from the Holly source and Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima to date appears to act primarily by reducing multiplication and movement of the virus. However, resistance to the fungal vector, Polymyxa betae, has also been found in wild Beta species. A source of resistance from B. maritima has been introgressed into sugar beet and F2 generations produced for analysis. A sensitive and specific DNA probe was used to detect the fungus in roots and select resistant plants. Using DAS-ELISA, the effect of virus and vector resistance on the level of virus in the roots of individuals in F2 populations derived from several crosses was examined.
