ESI-MS phenotyping of bovine beta-lactoglobulin genetic variants in a New Zealand dairy cattle population

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used to analyse samples of beta-lactoglobulin prepared from predominantly Jersey and Jersey-Friesian cross dairy cows to determine their beta-lactoglobulin phenotype. Within experimental error the mass of beta-Lg in all samples analysed corresponded to one (in the case of homozygous cows) or two (in the case of heterozygous cows) of the A, B or C variants of beta-Lg. No "silent" variants (variants which do not differ in net charge as a result of the substitution) were detected. The potential use of ESI-MS to supplement other phenotyping methods is highlighted.
