Analysis of calving indices of the Estonian Red breed cows acording to breeding components

The effect of the breeds used in selection of the Estonian Red breed cattle on calving indices was studied. The data of 16,362 cows from 513 farms were analysed. To study the effect of each breeding component, the following three groups of cows were used: cows without the genes of the breed under investigation (test group); the cows whose genotype contained up to 25 per cent of the genes of the breed under investigation; cows with more than 25 per cent of the genes of the breed under investigation. To analyse the length of calving interval t-test was used. The analysis showed that the cows with Danish Red breed genes were less assisted at calving, whereas the number of cows needing veterinary assistance increased. It also appeared that the number of inseminations per conceptions per conception was smaller, concerning the cows with up to 25 per cent Danish Red breed genes. The cows with Angeln breed genes had longer calving interval and higher number of inseminations per conception. The cows with American Brown Swiss breed genes had longer calving interval, whereas the cows with more than 25 per cent genes of American Brown Swiss needed less inseminations per conception. The cows of the Ayrshire and Jersey breed needed more assistance at calving, compared with other breeds
