Some correlations between the characteristics of the quality of silages estimated on the basis of samples collected in 1997

In DM the average contents of crude protein, crude fibre and butyric acid were 12.4 per cent; 30.2 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively and per 1 kg DM there was 8.9 MJ ME, 72 g digestible protein, 83 mg carotene, 7.5 g Ca and 2.8 g P. The best silages were from Adavere Agro Partnership. The fact that the silages prepared in Estonia were of high crude fibre and low protein content indicates that the beginning of the silage preparing was delayed. The high crude fibre content was correlated with low energy and protein content and also with somewhat lower Ca, P and carotene content. In silages rich in crude fibre the content of butyric acid was higher as well. The silages with higher crude protein content were richer in energy, also their Ca, P and carotene contents were higher. There was no correlation between the content of protein and butyric acid. The effectiveness of AIV preservatives tended to be the best in comparison with the other ones
