On the crude fibre content of grass feeds

At the Institute of Animal Husbandry the content of crude fibre, ADF and NDF in gramineous plants and in silage made of them was investigated. The fall in protein content of gramineous grass was bigger than that of leguminous rich grass. The protein content of gramineous grass decreased by 0.5 per cent per day and that of the leguminous rich grass by 0.3 per cent per day. In timothy hay the content of crude fibre exceeded its optimum value by 14...26 per cent already at the end of ear formation, being 30 per cent at the beginning of flowering. The later the grass for silage was harvested the lower its protein content was. In silages made of grass in later growth phases the content of crude fibre, NDF and ADF was higher. In silages made of gramineous plants NDF increased by 6.7 per cent from the period of leaftube formation to flowering and even by 13.6 per cent in leguminous rich silages. Preparing silage later on, the DM intake and the calculated as well as true digestibility of DM decreased. Determining NDF and ADF in feeds gives more exact information about intake and digestibility to formulate rations
