The inheritance of codeine content in opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) was studied using a 5 x 5 full diallel cross. Both the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant, indicating additive and non-additive gene action in the inheritance of codeine content. The reciprocal effect was neglected. The variance/covariance graphical analysis indicated the complete dominance of low codeine content. The variety Kompolti Resistant and the variety B-1 had the highest proportion of recessive genes, while the variety Kompolti had the largest number of dominant genes. In this set of opium poppy varieties the narrow sense heritability was relatively low. It was concluded that codeine content was a quantitative character determinded by several genes. In addition the variety B-1 appears to have a major gene for high codeine content.
