Improvement of rattan bending technique by soaked with dimethyl sulfoxide solution

Wood can be plasticized by using a range of chemicals. One of the chemical currently under investigation is dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution. Applying the same principle, rattan can also be manipulated in the same was as wood. Rattan and wood contains similar constituents with the same chemical structures, i.e. cellulose and lignin. The absorbed solution caused the swelling of cellulose fibers. The objective of the study is to obtain appropriate bending technique especially for rattan species which is difficult to bend. For this purpose the data on bending properties of 3 rattan species that soaked in 5 concentration levels of DMSO have been collected. The observation on density and distribution of vascular bundles indicated that batang cane is the highest compared to minong and manau canes. Consequently, batang cane cannot be coveniently bent unless soaked in at least 15 percent DMSO. On the other hand, minong cane only requires 5 percent solution. Damage on rattan fibers as the result of bending without soaking treatment is higher on batang and minong canes. Increasing the concentration of the solution leads to easier bending, reduces physical damage and has no effect on the shine of rattan; but tends to increase the rate of creep and shrinkage of volume and decrease the value of MOE and E/P ratio. The investigation reveals that the DMSO concentration very significantly affects the rate of change in MOE, creep and E/P ratio; and significantly affects the shrinkage of volume
