Evaluation of some Kenya tea (Camellia Sinensis) clones for resistance/susceptability to pestalotiopsis Theae (SAWADA) as influenced by some chemical attributes of mature green leaf

Evaluation of high yielding Kenyan tea clones for reaction to injection by Pestalotiopsis Theae was done in laboratory experiments. Tea clones responded differently to leaf injection by P. Theae. Clones 31/11 and 33/119 developed lesions significantly (P=0.05) smaller diameter of 1.8 and 2.2 mm respectively) than clone 303/999 and 303/577 which had the largest lesions (6.0 and 9.0 mm diameter, respectively). Investigations of factors responsible for resistance/susceptatility of tea clones to injection by P. Theae showed that total polyphenol content of mature leaves influenced injection. Total polyphenol content of leaves different clones and the size of lesions developed following injection by P. Theae showed significant inverse relationship. The water soluble carbohydrates content and the PH of cell cap of mature leaves of clonal tea did not influence leaf injection by the pathogen. The PH of medium significantly influenced vegetative growth of P. Theae in vitro in a quadratic manner with an optimum growth occuring at PH 5.0
