Field surveys were conducted along the coastal areas of Syria during 1991-92 and 1992-93 growing seasons. Symptoms of viral infections were observed on cultivated and wild legumes. Serological testes (ELISA) were carried out on 1382 samples collected of both cultivated and wild legumes. These samples showed some visual symptoms of viral infection. Results obtained from using 11 antisera identified a number of viruses that naturally infect these legumes. These viruses were: faba bean necrotic yellows virus (FBNYV), bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV), beet western yellows virus (BWYV), broad bean stain virus (BBSV), chickpea luteovirus (CPLV), bean leaf roo virus (BLRV), broad bean mottle virus (BBMV), cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), alflfa mosaic virus (AMV), broad bean wilt virus (BBWV) and pea seed-borne mosaic virus (PSbMV). FBNYV was the most commonly encountered virus followed by BYMV. Natural infection of a number of cultivated and wild legumes was recorded for the first time in Syria
