The selection of perennial grass and the initial development of their seed stock takes a significant place in the field of agriculture as well as in scientific research in Latvia. However the path of this branch has been and still is quite thorny. On the field of Latvia one still finds the crops developed by the founders of seed selector research Messrs. J.Pommers, J.Lielmanis and F.Jansons. Alongside these the present perennial grass seed selectors have developed new strains. There is rye grass "Spidola", the tetraploid meadow oat-grass "Patra", the timothy "T-79", developed by selector Dr.agr.P.Berzins.
