A community-based, micro-land use planning study of Barangay [village] Agawa, Besao, Mt. Province (in the Central Cordilleras) [Philippines] was done in April-May 1998 to develop appropriate land use plans that are environmentally sound, economically feasible, and socially acceptable. To develop the land use plan for the barangay, biophysical and socioeconomic assessments of each identified land utilization type were used as decision criteria. The community's inputs were incorporated through a workshop/consultation. For Agawa, the most urgent natural resource management (NRM) activity to be undertaken by the barangay is the protection and conservation of the extensive pine forests of the community. These remaining pine forests are in the watersheds of the barangay that provide the water supply essential for rice production in the terrraces, vegetable production and domestic needs. The pine forests also serve as the source of timber for house construction, furniture-making and firewood. Soil and water conservation to support the intensification of the vegetable production systems in the umas of the households is also a major NRM priority. Because of the favorable climatic conditions for semi-temperate vegetable production Agawa farmers have the potential of producing high-value vegetables (e.g. cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower). Given the proper production and marketing support, this activity will serve as a major source of income that will eventually ease the presence of exploiting the natural resources of the area, especially the pine forests
