Rumen metabolism in buffaloes as affected by feeding various levels of urea

The study was conducted to determine the effect of different levels of urea on rumen metabolism and nitrogen dynamics in buffaloes. Seven experimental rations were prepared by adding fertilizer grade urea at levels of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 percent, replacing cottonseed cake and wheat bran on nitrogen equivalent basis. The investigation was conducted on two rumen-fistulated adult male buffaloes following a cross-over design. The pH of the rumen liquor was significantly higher at 2.0 and 2.5 percent urea levels. Ammonia nitrogen in the rumen liquor increased progressively with the rise in urea level. Ammonia nitrogen also increased with the increase in passage of time post-feeding, peak being attained at 2 hrs post-feeding for 2.0 percent urea level, while it was attained at 4 hours with 2.5 and 3.0 percent urea. With a minor exception, urea nitrogen in the rumen liquor increased consistently at the rate of 2.86 mg/100 ml with each addition of one percent even to the ration.
