Nitrogen uptake patterns of japonica and indica rice varieties applied with varying levels of nitrogen fertilizer

A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of different levels of nitrogen (N) on the N uptake, yield, yield components and dry matter production of japonica (Hatsuboshi) and indica (IR13) rice varieties. Results showed an increasing trend in the N uptake, yield of brown rice, panicle number, plant height, and dry matter production with increased amount of applied fertilizer. The yield of the two varieties did not differ significantly and ranged from 3.2 to 6.5 tons/ha for Hatsobushi and 2.6 to 6.4 tons/ha for IR13. There was a 30 kg/ha increase in the yield of brown rice (0.92 percent for Hatsuboshi and 1.2 percent for IR13) and 1 to 1.4 percent increase in the total N uptake for each kilogram of N applied. Higher correlations were found between the yield, number of panicles/sq m and number of tillers, and N uptake at the early growth stage for IR13 and at the late stage to maturity for Hatsuboshi. The increase in yield could be attributed to the increase in N uptake with increase application of N and mineralized soil N after flooding
