Physiochemical, instrumental and microbiological investigation of the semipurified alkaloids from the leaves of Kamantigue (Impatiens balsamina Linn. Fam. Balsaminaceae)

The purpose of the study was to determine the alkaloidal contents of the leaves of a native plant called kamantigue (Impatiense balsamina Linn. Fm. Balsaminaceae). Plant samples were collected from Bulacan, a province of Central Luzon, Philippines. Kamantigue alkaloidal extracts were obtained by employing the continuous extraction method using Soxhlet apparatus followed by partial purification. The extracts obtained were then subjected to instrumental investigation using the Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and the FTIR Spectrophotometer. The antimicrobial activity of the alkaloids was determined by means of the cylinder plate method using Minconzole nitrate as the standard drug, and Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Tricophyton robrum and Malassezia furfur as test organisms. The major findings of the study were: 1.) the Kamantigue Alkaloidal extract obtained, which was light brown in color and odorless, was soluble in alcohol but not in water; 2.) the physiochemical test showed the presence of moderate amounts of flavonoids, and tavonin, and traces of sterols, saponin and glycosides; 3.) the infrared spectrophotometer showed that the functional groups present in the isolated alkaloids were amine, secondary amine, CH2 and aliphatic amine while the TLC method showed one alkaloid present; and 4.) the Kamantigue alkaloids were found to be potent source of medicine fo Staphylococcus aureus (bacteria) and Trichophyton rubrum (fungi)
