Status and conservation of wildlife in cold and dry mountain areas of Pakistan

Pakistan is located in the transition zone between two zoogeographical regions, the Palaearctic and the Oriental, due to which it contains rich biodiversity especially the mountainous areas. Status of biodiversity in the country is not fully known, however, general trend is downward and populations of most of the wildlife species have declined over a period of time. A number of wildlife species have declined to endangered status. Systematic surveys and studies have not been conducted to determine their population and habitat status in the country. Major constraints have been the lack of trained technical manpower, and resources. One of the major threats to biodiversity at present in these areas is loss/degradation of habitat due to deforestation, agriculture, mineral extraction, settlement, over use of rangelands by livestock and other development activities, Illegal hunting/poaching, competition with domestic livestock for food, water and space, poor law enforcement and lack of management based on sound database have been the other problems with wildlife. Habitat protection and improvement, conservation education, strong law enforcement and scientific management are essential for conservation of biodiversity.
