Number of generations and their duration of lemon butterfly, Papilio demoleus L. were studied in the citrus orchards. The studies were carried out in an artificially maintained population of P. demoleus under caged (3x3x3m.) condition. The data on insect development were recorded every alternate day throughout the year during 1989, 1990 and 1991. 8, 8 and 9 overlapping generations were recorded during 1989, 1990 and 1991 respectively. During 1989 the duration of generations were 49.00, 34.50, 27.00, 31.00, 32.00, 37.50, 50.00 and 122.00 (including over wintering stage) days for Ist, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th generation. During 1990, the duration of generations were 49.50, 32.00, 28.00, 34.50, 35.00, 34.50, 46.50 and 158 (includes over wintering stage) days for Ist, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th generation respectively. Whereas, during 1991 durations of generations were 59.00, 37.00, 26.00, 27.00, 27.00, 30.50, 33.50, 42.00 and 167.00 for Ist, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th generation respectively. In the later year, an extra generation (9th) started before the pupae went for winter diapause.
