Preliminary study on the validation of daily increment deposition in the larvae of seabass (Lates calcarifer) using otolith technique

Nineteen-day-old sea bass (Lates calcarifer Bloch) larvae were reared in a laboratory for 28 days. The larvae were fed to satiation with Artemia from day 3 onward. Results indicate that as the size of the fish increases, there is a concomitant increase in otolith length. Average growth rate of seabass larvae was 0.3366 mm/day while that of the otolith was 1.339 x 10 to the minus 2 mm/day. All otolith samples presented unreadable rings from the nucleus to the posterior edge. Therefore, a method was adapted to estimate the daily increment count. Estimated increment counts and true age of the fish showed significant different counts and true age of fish showed significant difference (R square = 0.725). A positive linear relationship was evident among fish total length, otolith length, otolith indices and otolith height. A perfect coefficient determination (R square = 1) was derived when fish age is correlated with total length
