An alternative theoretical approach to characterize the effect of extractives on sorption in wood was presented. Using the concepts of selective sorption and water cluster formation in wood, it was inferred that the presence of extractive could reduce the rate of monomolecular sorption in the lower relative humidity range, thus its completion at higher relative humidity. The presence of extractives also reduced the number of available sites for cluster formation and the volume of void spaces where capillary condensation could occur - a phenomenon which could reduce the volume of water sorbed, resulting in lower equilibrium moisture content of wood
