The effect of ethephon on the fruit harvest parameters and the extracted oil quality of two olive cultivars

Fruit bearing branches of cultivars Koroneiki and Mastoides were sprayed with ethephon following two ways: once at a concentration of 1700 and 1200 ppm for the two cultivars respectively, named normal treatment or T2, and in another way with half of the former concentrations 850 and 600 ppm repeated treatment or T1 for cvs. Koroneiki and Mastoides, respectively. The results of both treatments were compared to those of untreated branches named control or Ctr. In two and three fruit maturation stages named periods, the experiment was carried out for cvs. Koroneiki and Mastoides, respectively. The increase in the fruit drop FD and the leaf drop LD rates, and the decrease of the fruit removal force were enhanced by the advancement of maturation stage and were found, in both cultivars, to be proportional to the applied ethephon concentrations independently of the application way. The fruit oil content was not affected by the ethephon treatment. It increased in cv. Koroneiki with fruit maturation. The titratable acidity increased especially with fruit maturation and under the effect of treatment T2, mainly in the oil of cv. Mastoides. The peroxide value increased with fruit maturation in oils of both cultivars, yet it was higher in the oil extracted from the treated olives. Total phenolic content and phenolic composition in the oil were lower in samples related to T2 than in the control, but higher in the samples related to T1
