Genetic variability, heritability and expected genetic advance for seed yield and other quantitative characters over two years in lentil

Genetic variability, heritability and expected genetic advance were estimated for seed yield and 15 other characters in lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.). Experimental material included six parental lines and 15 F1s during the 1992-94 winter seasons. Maximum variability was recorded for pods per plant, followed by fruiting nodes per plant, germination 15 days after sowing, days to maturity, plant spread and harvest index (percentage). Greater variability was noted between crosses than between parents for all the traits except pods per plant and 100-seed weight. Yield per plant, secondary branches per plant, 100-seed weight and biological yield per plant appeared to be useful traits because high heritability and high genetic gain were recorded for these characters
