Characteristics and developmental morphology of reduced plant height mutants in lentil

Two reduced plant height mutants in lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.), namely, dwarf and bushy dwarf, were characterized and assessed for their breeding value. Alteration of shoot system resulting in significant reduction in plant height was noticed in both mutants. Shortening of internodes along with reduced number of internodes was mainly responsible for the reduction in height of mutant plants. The dwarf mutant, with marked reductions in the numbers of leaves and pods per plant, length of pod-bearing zone, and biological and seed yields, was only half the height of the parent variety P-38; however, it flowered and matured early compared with the control. The bushy dwarf mutant also had reduced numbers of primary branches and pods per plants, and biological and seed yields. Further, this mutant flowered and matured late. The difference in height of the bushy dwarf mutant and parent variety became noticeable only after 65 days of crop growth. Seed protein content was high in both mutants (bushy dwarf 24.5 percent and dwarf 23.2 percent) compared with the control (22.3 percent), although seeds were small in both
