A field trial with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.cv. Palava) in the 4th and 5th year of its vegetation was carried out on loamy soil, 410 m above the sea level, in the region of Benesov (Czech Republic). One part of the field was always harrowed in spring or after the 1st cut or the 2nd cut, and one part was not treated. The stand was cut three times a year. The yield of dry matter, the number of plants and sprouts and weed infestation were observed. The number of plants per square meter was between 105 and 126, respectively, the lowest number being found in the plots harrowed in spring. Neither total number of sprouts nor number of the sprouts growing from the underground buds were significantly affected by harrowing. There was a significantly higher number (by 4 - 22 %) of short sprouts (up to 150 mm) in the plots harrowed. Harrowing had no significant effect on the yield of dry matter, the number of Taraxacum officinalis L. plants was reduced (by 20 %)
