During 1996-1997, a field experiment with different varieties of Triticum spelta was carried out on brown loamy arable soil within an ecological system in the Nitra region (Slovak Republic). The yield formation characters and the crop yield itself were investigated in three spelt wheat cultivars (Baulander Spelz, Schwabenkorn, Roquin) and compared with common wheat. The agroecological conditions were most suitable for the Baulander Spelz cultivar of German origin, with the highest crop yield of 6.53 tons per ha, i.e. 93.3 % of common wheat yield. This cultivar reached the lowest percentage of glumes (25.85 %), the highest TGW (48.85 g), the lowest stem length (0.818 m), the longest spike (109.6 mm), the greatest number of spikelets (16.55) and the highest weight of grains per spike (1.3 g). All of the spelt wheat cultivars had lower productive density of stand (520 to 604 produced stems per square metre) than common wheat (690 produced stems per square metre)
