Soil chemical parameters and organic matter in soil management
1988
Gillman, G.P. | Shamshuddin, J. | Bell, L.C. (CSIRO, Qld (Australia). Div. of Soils)
Organic matter exerts an important influence on the chemical properties, and hence the fertility, of highly weathered soils of the humid tropics. This paper discusses the role of organic matter in the retention of nutrient cations such as calcium and magnesium, in controlling soil acidity, and in the availability to plants of anions such as phosphate and sulphate. There is a short discussion on future research needs relating to these considerations in the Pacific Islands region.
