Environmental considerations in establishing soil-based research networks

Population pressure obliges us to attach more importance to environmental concerns. This is a matter which should be a feature of long-term governmental policy. In the short term, it concerns the conservation of soil and water resources by means of whatever expert help and extension services can be recruited to meet immediate objectives. New technology should be assessed in relation to its environmental impact, and should be introduced only after prior consideration of possible damage to national resources. Priority given to environmental concerns may affect the availability of new agricultural technology since the assessment process in relation to environmental issues is not well defined or researched.
