Study on undergrowth and litter biomass in mixed deciduous forest at Mae Klong Watershed Research Station in Changwat Kanchanaburi

Study on undergrowth and litter biomass was carried out in the mixed deciduous forest of Mae Klong Watershed Research Station, Thong Pha Phoom district, Kanchanaburi. Three permanent plots (20*20 meters) representing three different habitats were used for biomass production studies over a period of one year (Jan. 1993-Dec. 1993). Each month, sampling of 10 quadrats/1 plot was carried out to evaluate the dry biomass production of each of the sampled quadrats and to identify the species. The three studied locations were found to consist of a total of 80 species from 35 families. In the mixed deciduous forest 58 species were present, teak plantation 46 species and cereal plantation 36 species. Of the 80 identified species 14 lifeforms can be defined, the tree lifeform is most common with 45 species. Dry biomass production from the forest location weighed 8 ton/hectar, cereal plantation 7.38 ton/hectar and teak plantation 5.8 ton/hectar. The relationship between biomass and environmental factors can be defined by the Stepwise multiple regression method. Biomass production is related to rainfall in the forest location, relative humidity and wind in cereal plantation and relative humidity in the teak plantation.
