Bird diversity and their relationships with habitat types at Nong Bung Kay Nonhunting Area, Changwat Chiang Rai

Study on bird diversity and their relationships to habitat types at Nong Bung Kay Nonhunting Area, Changwat Chiang Rai, was conducted for 12 months from June 1992 to May 1993. Monthly surveys were carried out using direct count along fixed routes, species encountered and their behavior were observed and recorded. A total of 92 species representing 13 orders, 39 families and 69 genera were observed in the study area. They were classified as 46 residents 35 winter visitor and 7 other species having populations which are both resident and winter visitor, 1 passage migrant, 1 resident and breeding visitor, 1 winter visitor and breeding visitor and 1 resident-winter visitor and passage migrant. The highest number of species occured in May 1993 (54 species) and the lowest number of species occured in June 1992 (32 species); 10 species were observed to be associated with open water zone, 9 species with floating zone, 24 species with snun and emergence zone, 21 species with island zone, 37 species with edge zone, 51 species with forest zone, 5 species with air space above grassland or water zone and 20 species with office zone. The occurence of birds found in this area are expressed in terms of abundance, very common, common, uncommon, rare and very rare; 8 species were found to be abundance, 15 species to be very common, 15 species to be common, 18 species to be uncommon, 22 species to be rare and 14 species to be very rare. The birds at Nong Bung Kay Nonhunting Area showed close relationship to the annual rainfall, temperature and habitat types.
