Effect of cultivars and cultivating locations on malting quality of barley in Thailand

Sixteen lines of barley (5 lines of two-row barley and 11 lines of six-row barley) were tested at 6 locations during 1993-94. Nine malting quality characters were evaluated and stability parameters were estimated under 6 locations using regression analysis technique presented by Eberhart and Russell (1966). The regression of varietal mean on environmental index and the deviation from regression mean square were used to evaluate malting quality stability. Mean of each character was considered with the two stability parameters to define the desirable variety for the stability of each malting quality characters. The results from stability analysis indicated that each variety differed in response to locations for malting quality characters. In two-row barley, BRB 11 appeared to be desirable line for malt extract and malt yield. ARTC-BL 9001 was the desirable line for stability of 1,000 seed weight and acrospire length. ARTC-BL 9101 was the desirable line for stability of seed moisture content and acrospire length. Whereas, BRB 10 and BRB 9 were the desirable lines for seed moisture content and 1,000 seed weight, respectively. In six-row barley, FNBL 8307-17-SMG-1-1 was the desirable line for stability of seed protein content. SB 27 was the desirable line for stability of diastatic power. Whilst, FNBL no.14003 and FNBL 8306-BC-SMG-6-1 were the desirable lines for 1,000 seed weight.
