Comparison of traditional lowland rice varieties

There are 9 varieties of traditional lowland rice; Kamcheen, Mae Charim, Fuangdib, Dhor Marae, Dhor Nokkan, San Patong, Kwanghak Lairang and Kaolong were studied selection of good and high yielding variety. And to find out basical characteristics of each variety for advance studying. The experiment was done at paddy field of Crop Science Department of Rajamangala Institute of Technology, Nan Campus during June-December 1992. The result indicated that there are great different in several characters; tillering capacity, panicle number/hill, percentage of productive tiller, spikelet number/panicle, percentage of ripened spikelet, grain weight, seed size and seed shape, culm length and also heading date. Unfortunately, yield of 4 varieties that flowered before October were damaged by birds. So, there are only 5 varieties were completely harvested and founded that their yields(kg/rai) are not significantly different. The fuangdib showed biggest yield/rai at 719.36 kg/rai and orderly followed by Mae Charim, Lairang, Kwanghak and Kaolong at 673.79, 626.43, 617.47 and 579.33 kg/rai.
