Effects of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on aggregation of sandy soils in Northeast Thailand

Sandy soils in Northeast Thailand are poor in physical properties as well as chemical properties. The poor soil physical properties have been considered to be mainly caused by lack of aggregation of soil particles. In the laboratory test, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was found to be very effective in stabilizing aggregates of the sandy soils. For instance, PVAs with molecular weight about 100,000 could stabilize the aggregate even at the application rate of 0.02 percent (w/w). This result suggested possibility of utilizing PVA for improving physical properties of the sandy soil in Northeast Thailand.
