The effects of priming on germination and longevity of sequentially harvested pepper seed lots

Priming in Polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000, -1.0 MPa, 20 deg C) for 7 days followed by drying or surface drying increased the rapidity of germination of pepper seed lots harvested 30, 40, 50, 55, 70, 80 and 90 days after anthesis. The effect on normal and total germination was more prominent on seeds harvested 50 days after anthesis. Mean longevity of 10 seed lots assessed with Ki (seed quality constant) was determined by storing them at 40 deg C and 10 % moisture content for 40 days. The standard deviation of the frequency distribution of individual seed lifespans did not differ remarkably between primed and norprimed seed lots
