Phenolic acids and total phenols in soil, litter and dominating plant species in community Orno-Quercetum virgilianae Gajic 1952 [Serbia, Yugoslavia]

The allelopathic researches of phenols were performed in a plant community of the association Orno-Quercetum virgilianae Gajic 1952. Investigations were performed on Avala mountain (the uppermost point 511 m a.s.l.), a small isle - like massif, situated near Belgrade, on the edge of the Pannonian lowland (Serbia, Yugoslavia). The seasonal dynamics of phenolic acids and total phenols (free and bound forms) was analyzed in soil, litter and leaves of Quercus virgiliana, Fraxinus ornus, Lithospermum purpureocoeruleum, Melica uniflora and Alliaria officinalis. Contents of total phenols in the leaves of Quercus virgiliana and Fraxinus ornus differ significantly (6.9 mg/g and 20.9 mg/g d.w., respectively). Free forms of phenols prevail in the leaves of dominant trees. Considerably greater content of total phenols was detected in the stems and roots of Lithospermum purpureocoeruleum (65.9 mg/g and 58.2 mg/g d.w., respectively). This species dominant in the layer of herbaceous plants. Content of free phenols varied from 1.9 to 7.2 mg/g in the litter and from 63.2 to 143.6 microgram/gram d.w. in the soil. Both free and bound forms of vanillic and syringic acids are dominating phenolic acids in the litter. Compared to free phenolic acids in soil, the proportion of bound phenolic acids is considerably greater (up to 17 times).
