Means of index values of 705 analyzed taxa in flora of the Backa loess plateau, Serbia (Yugoslavia), showed that in flora of the investigated region on soils of moderately heavy mechanical composition (D-3.75) plants from moderately arid habitats (F-2.53) adapted to a weak alkaline soil reaction (R-3.34) moderately supplied with nutrients (N-3.07) and humus (H-2.97) dominate. Among them, taxa from open habitats (L-3.75; T-3.96) adapted to temperate continental climate (K-3.30) prevail. Due to the salinas occurring at margins of the Backa loess plateau, 11.77% taxa characterized by S+ index value are found. In the biological spectrum a distinct domination of therophytes (T-44.25%) and hemicryptophytes (H-42.13%), as well as small percentages of geophytes (G-8.23%), phanerophytes (P-2.84), and chamaeophytes (Ch-2.55%) is recorded.
