During a three-year period (1994-1996) a total of 43 samples of feed mixes from the Republic of Serbia (Yugoslavia) were analyzed, intended for feeding all categories of poultry including starting broilers (11 samples), growing broilers (5 samples) and laying hens (27 samples). Thin-layer chromatography was applied for sample analysis. The obtained results were compared with values stated in the Book of Regulations on maximum tolerable levels of harmful substances and components in animal feed (Yugoslav Official Register, 2/90). The number and type of mycotoxins varies greatly according to the type of feed and among certain years. The presence of zearalenone (0.72-10.70 ppm) and ochratoxin (0.05-0.69 ppm) was determined all the examined samples, while aflatoxin was not isolated in any of the samples. The majority of the analyzed feedmixes contained tolerable mycotoxin levels (76.7), except mixes for laying hens in which 37 contained ochratoxin in levels above tolerated (0.27-0.69 ppm). On the basis of the results obtained from a limited number of samples it can be concluded that the majority of examined samples of feedmixes intended for feeding poultry were in accordance with values stated in the Book of Regulations. However, on our opinion, to effectively prevent the disturbance of health and production results in poultry it is necessary to apply continuous monitoring of the microbiological soundness of feed based on a considerably higher number of samples.
