Studies were undertaken over the periods 1985-1990 and 1993-1996 in order to study the effect of the cultivar on yield and quality of sugar beet grown on rhizomania infested and non-infested soil. Field experiments were conducted at DD Stari Tamis in Pancevo (Serbia, Yugoslavia) on the chernozem soil type. The productivity and technological quality of the following sugar beet cultivars were studied: Al Omona and KW Maja - susceptible to rhizomania, and Al Vita and Rama - tolerant to rhizomania. During the period without rhizomania (1985-1990) when standard-susceptible cultivars were used, root yield, sugar content and crystal sugar yield amounted to 72.3-72.5 t/ha, 15.82-16.08 and 9.34-9.49 t/ha, respectively. On the other hand, in 1996, with a high rhizomania signal value (51.88-82.88) the corresponding values amounted to only 26.1, 59.3 and 12.2. In 1996 using cultivars tolerant to rhizomania, especially the cultivar Rama, root yield was three-fold higher and sugar content was greater by 2.58-2.85. The yield of crystal sugar was more than six-fold higher than cultivars Al Omona and KW Maja.
