[Evapotranspiration, yield and quality of cabbage in dependence on preirrigation soil moisture and time of planting]

The experiment included two factors: preirrigation soil moisture (60-65% FWC), 70-75% FWC and 75-80% FWC) and five planting dates, 10-day intervals from 20 June to 1 August. The evapotranspiration of a late cabbage variety Futoski ranged from 311 to 476 mm, in dependence of preirrigation soil moisture, planting date and the conditions of the year of growing. It was found that the potential evapotranspiration of cabbage grown in the agroecological conditions of the region of southern Backa (Serbia, Yugoslavia) was 390-410 mm while the technical minimum of soil moisture was estimated at 70-75% FWC. The maximum water use efficiency was 6.85 mm for a ton of marketable cabbage heads. The largest marketable cabbage yield was obtained by transplanting in late June and early July, 61 t/ha. The yield gradually decreased with later planting. The optimum time for the transplanting of late cabbage varieties is the last 10 days of June and the first 20 days of July. Morphological characteristics of the cabbage varied highly significantly in dependence of the preirrigation moisture and planting date. The lowest dry matter content in inner leaves was obtained with the highest preirrigation moisture (75-80% FWC) and the first planting date. Dry matter content decreased with lower preirrigation moistures and later planting dates.
