Role and significance of aquatic vegetation in the Danube-Tisza-Danube Hydrosystem [Yugoslavia]

A short review is presented of investigations as regards to the role and significance of aquatic vegetation in the water ecosystem, with special regards to the aquatic flora and vegetation in the canals of Danube-Tisza-Danube Hydrosystem in Vojvodina (Yugoslavia). The role of aquatic plants in biofiltration and biodetoxification of aquatic ecosystems was pointed out, as well as their potentially negative influences. The recent state of flora in the canals of the Danube-Tisza-Danube Hydrosystem is described, underlining the necessity to protect the plants of significant value: Nymphaea alba L., Nuphar luteum (L.) Sm., Nymphoides flava Hill., Najas marina L. and Butomus umbeltatus L.
