Chemical properties of the chernozem soil of central Backa [Serbia, Yugoslavia]

The following conclusions were drawn on the basis of the analyses of 69 production plots on the chernozem soil, with the area of 6,900.48 ha in central Backa (Vojvodina Province, Serbia, Yugoslavia). The chernozem soil of central Backa is an exceptionally high-grade and productive agricultural soil with a stable reaction. Because of a long-term absence of organic fertilization and the burning of harvest residues, the content of humus was decreased in relation to the level determined during the preparation of the Soil Map of the Vojvodina Province in 1971. In consequence to an intensive application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, the contents of available phosphorus and potassium were increased in relation to the previously determined values. This is an indication that the intensity of fertilization could be reduced. However, the soil fertility control system should be enforced because reductions in the content of phosphorus occurred in certain plots as a result of inadequate fertilization. The levels of the analysed microelements are medium - optimum or high. Somewhat lower Zn levels and high Mn levels observed in certain plots do not reduce the production potentials of the chernozem soil. Nevertheless, these are additional proofs that soil fertility should be monitored systematically, as well as that the control system should include the monitoring of the status of microelements.
