The concentration of zinc and cadmium in alfalfa and cow's milk in the areas of Trepca and Obilic [the Province of Kosovo and Metohia, Serbia, Yugoslavia]. [A short version of master thesis]

In the Trepca and Obilic regions there is a high level of air pollution. Studies were conducted on the contents of Zn and Cd in water, alfalfa and in cow's milk in three periods during the vegetation season, in different geographical areas and different distances from the source of pollution. The results showed that the average content of Zn in dry matter (DM) in green alfalfa in the Trepca region is 95.09 mg/kg, while in the Obilic region 54.18 mg/kg, which is further more than in noncontaminated regions (6.1 mg/kg). The contents of Zn and Cd in water of the rivers Ibar and Sitnica exceeds the allowed concentration. The average content of Zn in cow's milk in the Trepca region is 5.98 mg/l, while in the Obilic region it is 4.64 mg/l, which is lower than the maximum allowed conc. of 7 mg/l. In the K. Mitrovica region the conc. in milk was 8.70 mg Zn/l, while at other checkpoints the content of Zn was lower (P0.01). The content of Cd in alfalfa in the Trepca region was 0.12 mg/kg DM, while in the Obilic region it was 0.07 mg/kg DM. The content of Cd in milk in the Trepca region was 0.03 mg/l, while in the Obilic region it was 0.04 mg/l, which is lower than MPL as determined by Yugoslav standards. Some urgent activities should be taken to avoid further pollution to project the environment.
