Prediction of the relative storability of maize (Zea mays L.) seed in a gene bank

Muminovic, J.
The experiment was conducted in order to determine maise seed storage behaviour, under medium-term storage conditions (0-4 deg C, 50-60 relative humidity) of the Genebank for Maize, within the Maize Research Institute "Zemun Polje", Belgrade - Zemun (Yugoslavia). Accessions of different genetic composition (inbred lines, local and synthetic populations) were studied. The accessions also different regarding storage period, moisture content and initial viability (viability at the beginning of storage). A standard germination test was used to determine the experimental value of seed viability. Theoretical germination rates were derived in accordance with a mathematical model proposed by Ellis and Roberts. Statistical tests showed no significant differences between experimental and theoretical values in the accessions, except in the case of inbred line A 634. The applied mathematical model may be employed in the prediction of viability loss in conserved germplasm. Destructive germination tests can thus be avoided and the initial variability of accessions maintained for much longer periods.
