Influence of soil infection with beet necrotic yellow vein furovirus on performance of the sugar beet varieties under Hungarian climatic conditions

The extent of BNYVV infection and the major parameters of performance (yield, sugar content, extractable sugar content and extractable sugar yield) of the sensitive and tolerant varieties of sugar beet were studied in 1997 at four locations (Csorvas, Kaba, Petohaza and Tompaladony) in Hungary, where the soils were infected with rhizomania. The data of the two sugar beet variety-groups were compared. The extent of BNYVV infection was much lower in the tolerant varieties. The yield, sugar content, extractable sugar content ad the extractable sugar yield of the tolerant varieties exceeded those of the sensitive ones. The results obtained show that the production of rhizomania tolerant varieties of sugar beet is an effective way of controlling rhizomania disease on heavily infected areas.
