Sugar beet crops were first damaged by curculionidae Aubeonymus mariaefranciscae (Roudier) in 1979. At present there are some 3000 hectares affected, distributed in the provinces of Jaen, Cordoba and Sevilla. The biological cycle of this weevil is well adjusted to the cycle of autumn beet. They begin their activity when seedlings appear, both adults and larvae feed on leaves and roots, and they satisfies all their needs in the crop until the pupa is formed -almost at harvest time- within a soil niche where it spends the summer. The most serious crop damage occurs when the adults eat the seedlings in autumn. In the case of dense populations, these weevils can destroy the crop and make sowing again necessary. Larvae produce descending injuries to the roots, delaying their development. Protective measures have been adapted as crop cultivation has become more technologically advanced. In endemic zones, it has been necessary to adopt a complete programme of crop control in order to live with the pest. Seeds sown are protected with Gaucho + Force, a barrier one metre wide of beet treated with Temik surrounding the field is planted, substances are applied to leaves when movements of the adults are detected and crop rotation is scrupulously respected.
