Reversed glacier flow in marginal mountains of Antarctica: the example of De Breuckbreen. Paper dedicated to Professor William De Breuck, glaciologist of the 1960 Belgian Antarctic Expedition

During the Japanese Antarctic Research Expeditions, Jare 28 (1986-87), Jare 31 (1989-90) and Jare 32 (1990-1991), the authors carried out mass balance, ice thickness and ice velocity measurements in the central part of the Soer Rondane Mountains in Eastern Dronning Maud Land, an area investigated for the first time during the Belgian Antarctic Expeditions 1958-1960. Both the field measurements and the modelling experiments indicate that the Soer Rondane is - and has been for a very long time - an ablation island within the accumulation area of East Antarctica. It is shown that the peculiar behaviour of De Breuckbreen, which flows opposite to the main ice stream, can be considered as characteristic for such ablation islands.
