Grey alder and hybrid alder plantations on former agricultural land and their biomass production

This study is based on three experimental plantations. To develop rational methods of afforestation of abandoned agricultural land with grey alders, the different planting material was used (generative and vegetative origin). Growth of planting material of grey alder of generative origin is more vigorous than growth of plants of vegetative origin, this difference does not disappear even with ageing of the stand. The growth of two hybrid alder plantations was significantly different. Probably the difference was due to different soil conditions. The biomass production of the grey alder stand exceeds that of the hybrid alder stand. In the hybrid alder plantation the share of branches and leaves in the general biomass was bigger than it was in the grey alder plantation
