Effect of Azolla on organic matter content, total-N, available-P of soil, and growth and yield of lowland rice

A glass house experiment to study the effect of Azolla and its application on organic matter content, total-N, and available phosphate of soil, and growth and yield of lowland rice was conducted in the glass house of the Agricultural Faculty of North Sumatra Islamic University (UISU), Gedung Johor, Medan. The experiment was arranged in split plot design with three replications. The main plots were two application of Azolla: planted in the soil and broadcasted on soil surface. The sub plots were fresh Azolla, dry Azolla, and Urea fertilizer. The sub plots were levels of Azolla and Urea which were equivalent to 0 ppm N, 200 ppm N and 300 ppm N. Variables observed were organic matter content, total-N, and available-P of soil, and growth and yield of lowland rice. The result of experiment showed that Azolla increased organic matter content, total-N, and available-P of soil, and growth and yield of lowland rice. The effect of fresh Azolla is higher than Urea on total N yield of lowland rice. Fresh Azolla gained total-N as much as 0.03 percent or equivalent to 600 kg N/ha at 80.3/pot (16 ton/ha). Percobaan rumah kaca untuk mengetahui pengaruh Azolla dan cara pemberiannya terhadap kandungan bahan organik, N-total, dan P-tersedia tanah, serta pertumbuhan dan produksi tanaman padi sawah telah dilakukan di rumah kaca Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara (UISU), Gedung Johor, Medan. Rancangan percobaan ialah rancangan petak terpisah dengan ulangan tiga kali. Sebagai petak utama adalah: cara pemberian Azolla yakni dibenamkan ke dalam tanah dan disebar di permukaan tanah. Sebagai anak petak adalah: Azolla segar, Azolla kering, dan pupuk urea. Sebagai anak petak adalah: dosis Azolla dan urea masing-masing setara dengan 0 ppm N, 200 ppm N dan 300 ppm N. Parameter yang diukur adalah: kandungan bahan organik, N-total, dan P-tersedia tanah, serta pertumbuhan dan produksi padi. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan bahwa Azolla nyata meningkatkan kandungan bahan organik, N-total, dan P-tersedia tanah, serta pertumbuhan dan berat gabah. Pengaruh Azolla segar terhadap N total tanah dan produksi gabah lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan pengaruh pupuk urea. Pemberian Azolla segar dengan dosis 80,3 g/pot (16 ton/ha) menambah N tanah sebanyak 0,03 persen atau sama dengan 600 kg N/ha. Pengaruh cara pemberian Azolla dengan disebar di permukaan dan dibenamkan ke dalam tanah tidak berbeda nyata
