The basic legislation concerning fertilizers in Latvia is "Law on fertilizers". At present draft of "Law on fertilizers" is in a stage of coordination between government institutions. There is necessary to introduce fertilizer legislation for control fertilizers in Latvia, which will ultimately lead to increasing in the competitiveness of agricultural production and to the protection of animals and the environment from any use of poor quality fertilizers. In order to ensure introducing of legislation, "The regulations of registration of fertilizers" prepared in 1999. The Regulations regulate the conditions of registration of fertilizer determine requirements relating to fertilizer specifications, minimum nutrient contents, tolerances, packing, marking and labelling information and others.
