Wheat-rye crossability and characterization of the alloplasmic rye obtained

Triticum aestivum L. lines LT and L-430 of good crossability with Secale cereale L. and cv. Starke were crossed with the short-strawed Dm rye mutant to create an alloplasmic rye. Seed set was highest in the case of line L-430 (82.3 %), intermediate in LT (42.5 %) and zero in "Starke", not any seed was obtained with this variety. Seed set was extremely low in the two subsequent backcrosses, in BC1 and BC2. Only one plant (line L-430) survived from BC2 and gave rise to BC3. From BC3 on seed set became more and more normal. The sterility was expressed in the lack of stamens, empty anthers and reduced production of pollen grains. Alloplasmic plants were shorter, their grains were smaller and their flowering began nine days later than that of the normal rye. All this makes the use of male sterility of allo-rye for the hybrid rye breeding problematic.
