Productivity of clover-grass sward and dynamics of crude protein level in sward components

The productivity of early red clover grown in binary mixtures with 13 grasses species has been studied on brown-lessive and sod-podzolic gleysolic soils of Latvia. Field experiments were carried out in time and space. Experiments have shown that the productivity of red clover-grass swards is greatly due to cenotic activity of grasses, and reached for 10.94 and 9.47 t haE-1 dry matter (DM) yields average on brown-lessive and sod-podzolic gleysolic soils, respectively. Most productive two-component swards were established on brown-lessive soil as well as on sod-podzolic gleysolic soil. Significant differences between values of crude protein were found for grass species in pure stands and mixtures with red clover under similar growing conditions. Behaviour of each grass species was somewhat different with the inclusion of red clover ratio in mixture, and it favored crude protein content in dry matter.
